4Mbps broadband in Malaysia, is it for real?

I know the title is gonna be a joke in a couple of years, but I finally got my TMNut Streamyx 4Mbps broadband to my home today, after applying for it 7 months ago!. Previously I was solely relying on my unreliable Celcom 3G for broadband at home, and while on the road.

I’m not sure if this 4Mbps package is for real, and so I test my broadband speed using speedtest.net, and here’s the result;

Pretty impressive I would say, but when I start downloading from international servers, my download speed rarely exceed 100KBps, which translates to speed of less than 1Mbps.

I guess I’ll just wait for the High Speed Broadband project to become a reality as being recently announced by the government, and see if things do get better.

I gave away my last desktop PC around 3 years ago, but now with many interesting things happening in the IT world for me to try, I decided to get myself a decent desktop PC as there are things that my current laptop couldn’t provide. That includes big screens and powerful processors.

 I bought one with the following spec;

  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 processor
  • 4GB RAM
  • GeForce 9500 GT
  • 2*1TB (RAID 1 configured) + 200GB + 160GB HDD
  • 2 * 22" LCD monitor,

hoping to do a lot of things with virtual machines that this machine should be able to run a few of them running at any one time. Maybe I need to upgrade the RAM in the nearest time.. :)

I’m not sure if it’s an overkill, but I really hope I’ll make good use of them, instead of playing games :)

For some political reason, as described here, Codeweaver is giving away their professional version of Crossover Mac and and Crossover Linux for free. This however is only valid for those who registers for the products today.

Crossover Mac and Crossover Linux are both proprietary Wine based programs that was tweaked with various compatibility patches, more user friendly configuration tool, and support, to run Windows programs on both Mac and Linux.

To get the software, one must first register here, and here’s a note from the page:

We are giving away all of our software for free on Tuesday, October 28th, 2008. This is a fully working, fully supported copy of either CrossOver Mac Professional, or CrossOver Linux Professional. No hooks, tricks, timebombs, or gimmicks: it’s the real deal.

To get your free software, simply enter your email below, confirm it, and enter the agreement code shown below. An email will be sent to your email address containing a serial code. Once you receive your serial code, go to http://register.codeweavers.com and register your software. Once you’ve done that, you will be able to log into your account on CodeWeavers’ web site, and download your product. PLEASE NOTE: your serial code must be registered on our site before 23:59 PM Central Standard Time. After midnight Tuesday, it is no longer valid.

(Please Note: if you are an existing CodeWeavers customer, this deal will give you a completely new support entitlement for another 12 months. That also means that if you’re an existing user of our Standard products, Merry Christmas: you’ve just been upgraded to Pro. For Free.)

*** Please note that the site is damn slow, probably due to overwhelming traffic of people trying to get the software, or it’s just Codeweaver’s tactic to minimize downloading by limiting their resources :D ***

I was on my way back home from office yesterday that I passed a car that really caught my attention, a BMW X6. I don’t know what does this should mean to me, but I saw the same BMW X6 once again when I was on my way to the office this morning. Maybe I’m just meant to have one in thew nearest future? :D

These Youtube videos should be more meaningful than my low quality photo;
