Installing Internet Explorer for Linux

Need to access eperolehan.com.my but this so-called Open Source initiated government’s website requires nothing more than MS Internet Explorer. Being a full time Linux user, booting up Windows is not really a pleasure. I remembered reading about IEs4Linux (http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/index-en.html) few days back, and I should just give myself a try.

In gentoo it’s fairly simple. I just need to emerge wine and cabextract, and then download the ies4linux package from http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/downloads/ies4linux-2.0beta8.tar.gz , extract it and run the ies4linux script, and the rest is fairly automatic. Let’s register some companies, yeah :)

On leave from work today, and that gives me some time to do things of my own. Thought of doing some programming, but it doesn’t last long since I’ve had too much of it already last weekend. My handset suddenly dies, and that gives me some ideas on what to do..

The first thing to do surely is to fix the phone (Ok, actually the first thing I did was to search for a new one, but Bangi doesn’t seem to have the phone that I was looking for. Cheapskate!). It’s a five year old phone (almost), and I’m kinda used to unscrew it for cleaning. Use to send it for repair since it hangs a lot and it costed me Rm100+ that time coz I was told few chips need to be replaced. The next time it hangs, I went to the hardware shop and get myself a torx screw-driver set, find myself some cotton bud, and just by cleaning up the dusts saves my RM.. This time it’s more critical than that since it wouldn’t power on at all, and some soldering at the power switch saves my RM again. Btw, the handset is seriously broken thanks to my go-kart marathon during my previous visit to Sabah, and my leave today is just for the same reason, that my rib muscles is injured, and the pain is so bad today that I go and see the Dr (Luv?) instead of going to work. It’s just to get an MC anyway :)

With my hardware kits all over the place, it reminds me of my chat with my ex manager. At that time he gave me these links:

http://www.unitednuclear.com/magnets.htm
http://www.unitednuclear.com/laser.htm

And today I’m trying this, which link was also given by him: http://www.7volts.com/magnets.htm

Look at the harddisk magnet that I’ve got from my broken Maxtor holding the pole. If you’re into ordering the magnets and lasers, do let me know :) And if you enjoy this post, you might as well enjoy this site: http://www.hackaday.com

Receive a visit from 2 Germans today, and apart from bringing us some Germany’s World Cup jerseys, they’re here to discuss about our custom ordered boards from their company. The boards are to be used for our wireless infrastructure setups and I’m surprised myself that I’ve come this far into embedded system; a field that I never even thought I would be in before. Putting aside my job here, I see many interesting things that can be done with the boards :D

LinuxMalaysia @ Bangi

Our meetup proceed as usual last nite, and we had some discussion and demo on embedded systems. More on that in my other blog entries.

The not so usual thing about last nite was that we had a visitor (though it’s not that unsual to have visitors), named Harisfazillah, usually known as Hafnie, and nicknamed LinuxMalaysia (not so sure about the LinuxMalaysia, but that’s what he put in my shoutbox :p ). Bro Hafnie was one of the first guys that I knew from Malaysian Linux community. At that time I was at bincang.net (BDN) and ittutor.net (ittutor). And the story goes till I came across mypenguin99, MyOSS, and few other groups. 3xb055 (the name of our usrah, 3b(Bandar Baru Bangi) 055 (OSS) is a group by itself, and being in one group doesn’t mean we’re not joining other groups as well. We’re just divided by specific interest, and by geography factor, but when it comes to FLOSS, we’re actually one.

What brings Bro Hafnie to Bangi last nite, apart from joining the fun with our weekly meetup, was to see if there’s any way that we can collaborate with his weekly meetup group at Ampang, discuss on available facilities and how to utilize them, and also some discussion on future directions and activities. It’s interesting to see if FLOSS groups in Malaysia can at one time combine force and come out with some big event or anything like that..

Internet connection was slow in the office for the past few days, and I thought it was streamyx problem until today that I suspected something was not right from within the office itself.

The first tool used was etter*** to poison everybody’s arp so that i can see everybody’s traffic. I was just interested to see things general, and so I fire up etherape, and here’s what I got:

From here I can see the culprit (in this case, the one with the most connection). Where to go from here? The imagination is up to you..

LPI for everyone

Received a package from Canada last weekend, and to my surprise, it’s /another/ lpi cert + card.

Yes, I’m a LPIC 1 holder, but was my result too good that I deserve to get 4 (same) certs + cards?

I passed my LPI 102 exam on August 2005, and over a month later, I still didn’t get my cert, while my friend who passed the exams after me already received his cert. I sent an email to LPI and in 2 weeks time I got 2 packages from LPI, both containing the same content, my cert for sure. That’s 2 certs at one time.. Too bad for me that rather than displaying my name (Mohd Shakir Zakaria) as I wanted it to be, the certs and cards that I received displayed Mohd Zakaria. I sent another email to LPI, and within a couple of weeks I got my replacement card. Good, but 5 months later (last weekend to be exact), I receive this aforementioned package, that made the LPI certs and cards that I have counts to 4.

If only that I can distribute all the extras that I have, hmm..

KL International Motor Show (KLIMS) 2006

Went to KLIMS 2006 at PWTC today, and I put my DSC H5 into test.. All of the photos were taken with the sensitivity of ISO 80, with slow synchro flash were used for most of them. The photos are already in my Photo Gallery, and all the photos there are free for download. They are in reduced size and quality (to save on my webhosting space and bandwith), and if any of you require them in full resolution, just let me know about it.

There are also some video clips which includes some acts by ASIMO, Honda’s intelligent little baby. You can find the clips in my download section.

These 2 liner helps me to get things done faster:

for i in `ls *.jpg`; do convert -verbose $i -resize 600x600 \
   -quality 85 mini-$i; done
for i in `ls *.mpg`; do ffmpeg -i $i -target ntsc-vcd mini-$i; done

p/s: I’m not a professional / full time photographer, so dont complain about the quality. With huge crowd at the motor show, it’s hard to get into the right position and to have some sweet time taking the shots.

Gallery is back

My photo gallery broke for quite some time now, and I still don’t have the time to fix the errors. Though it can display photos, the internals are broken; users can’t comment or do anything interactive with it, and me as the admin couldn’t even upload new photos :(

In the spirit of my new toy (see my previous blog entry), I made a complete backup of the existing photo gallery and do a fresh install of Gallery2 :) While for now you can view latest photos only, I just hope that I’ll be able to get all my previous photos online in the nearest time.

Been woken up by my housemate to help him fighting a "lipan bara". Nice, I can try my new toy (Just bought it after office hour today.  Well defined "new"..):

And here’s the stripped photo of our "guest":
